Pillow(s) of the Week

Today's Agenda:  The weather is confused.  So I'm a little out of sorts.  It was supposed to snow but not till later today.  And now it's a mix of rain/sleet/snow and later today thundersnow?!

What I am not confused about -- Pillows.  I know it's a problem -- evidenced by this situation.

It's amazing how 20" square or less can really change a room.  I like to have a neutral background in a room, a pretty paint color and then add some great pillows.  Like they are art.  There are some great ones out there right now...here are just a few for you to take a looksee at.

Which one is your favorite???

A "Flash Redesign": A Brooklyn Living Room Before AND After!

Today's Agenda:  Oops, the week got away from me!  Had wanted to post this last week...

So, you'll remember that last week I showed the before and after of a home office in a 1 bedroom Brooklyn apartment.  The goal was to edit the clutter, find a home for the stuff that had to remain and create a space to work comfortably from home in.  Well, while I was there and we were in rearranging mode, we made a few tweaks to the adjoining living room too...

So, here are "before" photos of the living room!

And, with a new layout and just a few purchases -- pillows, baskets, a rug, and a new storage system -- here is the "after"!
The goal was not to do a complete overhaul of the room.  And it's not ready for a magazine shoot.  But it's ready to be lived in and enjoy.  The goal was to just to edit the space to make it more inviting since it is this family's main living space for dad, mom and new baby.  And to do what I could do in a couple of days without spending a ton of money.  Here are a few of the main thoughts behind this "flash redesign":

1.  Layout:  The gray sofa was a new addition to the room since it is a sleeper sofa to accomodate guests.  But mom didn't think it was as comfortable as the "old" sofa so now there are two sofas!  By facing them towards each other it seems a bit more purposeful and creates a space to have friends over in.  Only problem was that the back of the "old" sofa just wasn't that cute to be the first thing you saw when you walked in the door.  So, I repurposed the old desk and created a sofa table area.

Now, there's a great space for a lamp, a place to set out drinks and food for guests and a place for more storage underneath and in the drawers.  Best part was that it cost $0 to do this!

And, I found a great place for the John Derian for Target Honeycomb storage bins -- see them??  I found these on clearance at Target ahead of the honeycomb trend :)  The things that make me happy...

2.  The Rug:  Adding a rug can do a lot for a room!  BUT it's a hard decision.  In part, I think because a rug can be so large that it really defines the space and is physically/mentally difficult to think about -- what if it's not the right one?  How will I return it?  Is it too expensive to get this decision wrong?  Well, we chose the Chevron Rug from West Elm for a few reasons.  It is big enough to fill the space.  It's comfy enough to give baby a place to play and crawl on.  It won't shed like a wool rug will which in a small space is important.  It's a neutral but beautiful color.  It should hide most stains -- primarily baby spit up or red wine :).  That chevron pattern in it is to die for.  And, it could be returned if it really didn't work out.

3.  Storage: We needed more storage in this space too for all those weird things that come with a baby!  By incorporating the TV storage with a cabinet for baby stuff the storage looks purposeful and seamless.  It is the same Ikea Besta/Inreda system as is in the adjoining office area.  I chose white  instead of the black/brown though to blend into the walls and make the room seem larger. But I kept the same chrome legs and same glossiness on the finish of the doors.  And I didn't want it to be too matchy with the office area, just coordinating.  I also wanted to maintain maximum flexibility and chose three separate pieces in the system instead of one large one.  This way, down the road, in a bigger space you could combine the two systems or change out the doors or just add to each and have in two separate rooms.  You could even put one of the side pieces in a bathroom for extra storage.  Endless possibilities.  Loads of flexibility.

4.  Baby Gear:  And you know how so many pictures of rooms don't actually show how you live in the space?  Well, here is a photo of the space with the baby accoutrement.  I needed to be sure there was enough space for these pieces and didn't want mom and dad to have to keep moving furniture everytime baby wanted to play.  There's just no graceful way to hind the playmats that babies love!  And it doesn't last for long so why not just embrace it!

5.  Create Vignettes:  A trick to keeping the room looking put together even when chaotic and filled with a Christmas tree and baby toys is to create vignettes around the room.  This way, with a quick clean up of gifts and baby items, the room is put together and ready to entertain in.  There was even space for a robust Christmas tree and gifts underneath!

I hope you enjoyed this "flash redesign"!  We used a lot of what they had, (two sofas, old desk, lamps, chair), got rid of a few pieces that weren't working in the room (the TV storage piece), added some accessories to finish the room (rugs and pillows) and worked with the layout to find a good way for everyone in this home to live comfortable in this space.  All without spending too much and completing it in just a few days!

Good Afternoon! A Brooklyn Home Office - After!

As promised this morning, the "after" image of a recent home office redesign in Brooklyn...

Again, the "before",

and, the "after"!
I had a ton of fun trying to come up with a system that would hopefully keep this family organized.  Everyone is different in how they work best.  Some people like everything hidden.  Some people like things fully in sight otherwise it's like it doesn't exist.  I thought this design blends both worlds.  I didn't want too many boxes because that makes it difficult to actually go into the box to put stuff in its designated place.  So there is a lot of open storage where you can toss your bills, magazines, coupons, recycling and organize things fairly quickly.

Want to see some of the details of the design?

And a close-up of the storage system.

A close-up of the desk area.  Added some task lights, containers for binder clips and extra pens and pencils and some trays to keep the mailing stuff and electronics cords corralled.  Even used a random stool they had as a place to set documents while working on them.  And the Ikea sheepskin rugs add a bit of lux and comfort when working late at night :).

And, guess what?  While I was working on the office, we made a few tweaks to the living room too!  Come back tomorrow to see the "before and after" of the living room and what a big change just a few changes can make!

Good Morning! A Brooklyn Home Office - Before!

Today's Agenda:  I'm continually editing my office as I get new samples and pieces for styling in stock.  Some times I think I have so much stuff in this office but then I start looking through everything and love it all and end up using everything too.  Pics to come later in the week I think of my home office.

But until then here are some pics of a home office I recently worked on in a Brooklyn apartment!

It's a very familiar story -- Mom and Dad have crazy busy jobs in Manhattan, have a spacious one bedroom apartment in a great neighborhood with awesome neighbors and then recently welcomed a new baby to their Brooklyn home.  And, then the mail got out of control, the boxes from Diapers.com were unstoppable and stacking vertically was the only option.

Here are the before pictures of the office space.  It's a full landing when you walk in the front door and then you step down into the living area.  Beautiful floors, lots of character and spacious for New York.

Come back this afternoon for the "After" photos!

Must Have Item for 2011

Today's Agenda:  Enjoying the first biz day of 2011 -- Happy New Year!

First order of the day was to scope out some online sales...just to make sure I didn't miss anything spectacular.   My best deal of the post-holiday sales has to be from West Elm in Tysons Corner last week during their 20% off sale items sale.  Check it -- these Chevron curtains that were originally $79 per 108" panel are now mine for just $11.75 per panel! They are gorgeous in person.

Seems like this year there are some great sales in the stores, a little more than online.  I did make sure to check out Garnet Hill online though.  I am always drawn to their catalog -- I love how effortless some of the clothes look with boots, tights, cute black dress and pretty scarf.  The pieces I liked were already sold out but I did find some fun home items including the MUST HAVE ITEM OF 2011. The collapsible basket.

I have two of these and am not sure what I would do without them.  They are so sturdy perfect for grocery shopping, carrying stuff for projects, books, just about anything.  And you take these side things that make the basket stand up out and it collapses and easily hides away in your coat closet or backseat of the car.  When I was in New York a couple of weeks ago for husband's surgery, I had all of our food, water and randomness in one of these and seriously had at least 3 people stop me and ask me where I got the basket.  Well, Garnet Hill has these in black and the retro pattern in the lower left corner for a pretty decent price.  You could find them for a little less at Marshalls/Homegoods/TJMaxx but since that's a little hit or miss I would just get two of these (one for each hand) and call it a day.

I hope everyone has a great 2011!  I'm excited for new projects, more travel, constant inspiration and exciting adventures.
