Ooh...these tables!

Sometimes a coffee table can be just a "big chunk of wood".  Uninteresting.  Maybe even not that functional.  But not these.  {And, of course, there is nothing that beats a one-of-a-kind beautiful broken-in antique wood table.  Hard to find a picture of those for purposes of the blog.}

Colors and Textures of Food

The other night I made this.

Sweet potato, some goat cheese layered on top of the sweet potato, then sauteed squash and zucchini. And some basil and pesto chicken sausage.  I really liked the various colors and textures against the white porcelain bowl.

And it made me feel inspired.  To think more consciously about color and texture combinations from ordinary things and actions, like making a random dinner out of whatever (I hope) is left in the fridge.

Recently a friend of mine had put aside a children's book to point out that she really liked the color combination of the art on the cover of the book and thought I would too.  I did!  So much that the next day as I looked into my closet (yes, of too many clothes...) I was inspired to put together an outfit with just those colors.  A teal/green, a burnt orange, an ivory...with jeans.  I didn't realize what I had done until later that day and it made me smile to think that one look at a book could unconsciously inspire me to put together individual clothing pieces that I had each worn 20 times before in a completely new combination.

I have been trying to take more time to think about how to translate color and texture combinations from everyday items that strike me -- food, books -- into more extraordinary ways -- the redesign of a kitchen, a dinner party, holiday decorations and gift wrap.  Do you remember the column Domino used to have called "Turn this Room into an Outfit"?  (Design Sponge is also doing this a little bit now...) After reading each month's issue I would sit and picture my clothes and think about my favorite color combinations.  Like the yellow J.Crew cardigan with a little ruffled collar I loved until it (finally) wore out (okay, I have it in about 4 colors so it still lives on) and a deep gray A-line skirt with a navy silk blouse.  With a single strand of pearls and some gold and silver bracelets.  Different colors and textures.  That produced a outfit that felt great on.  And then sit and think about the endless possiblities for translating that into a room...

New York, New York!

Today's Agenda:  Unpack and upload.

My mom and I just got back from our weekend trip to New York!  We celebrated her birthday (a big one!) and got our fix of New York restaurants and shopping.  So fun!  Enjoying unpacking some great finds from our trip this morning -- four boxes of Crane's stationery from TJ Maxx, Muji small binder and fillers, fantastic necklace from Banana that was a steal, stationery samples from Kate's Paperie, caramel color cordurouys from TJ Maxx for only $30...not such a bad way to start out a rainy day.

Here are some highlights from the trip:

View from Asiate at the Mandarin Oriental

I love this seating arrangement and the decor.

Fun flower arrangements at the Mandarin.
Random theater production on a side street in Soho.

CB2 -- I finally went to the store!  It didn't let me down.
FLOR tiles in person!  A dream!

I love this vase.  Perfect just about anywhere.

So cute for the holidays!

Muji!  Another dream come true!

Ah, all the little containers...

My mom captured me in a planning moment...

Wonderful, rich salad at Fig & Olive.

My mom.

Great example of a ceiling painted a darker, warmer color than the walls.

Pretty herbs.

I love wine.

A gorgeous restaurant.

The Standard, Meatpacking District.

Oh, New York.

The Puma Penguins!

My favorite time of day in New York - 9:00 a.m.  Still pretty sleepy.

Can't go wrong with coffee + pumpkin praline muffin for breakfast.

Bat-tacular

Where to next??

 Beautiful morning in Soho.

Fields of Frisse at Dean & Deluca.

Happy camper.

Deals!

Today's Agenda:  Enjoying thinking about the productive day of shopping I had with a client yesterday.  A rug, curtains (and curtain accessories), chair were purchased and paint colors finalized.  Almost there!  I'm also culling through my inbox and making some November plans.  And getting excited about these deals that popped up in my inbox!

1.  If you use the coupon on The Container Store's website by November 1 take 20% off any purchase.  Quick, get organized!

 {And while you are on their website, enter here to win a $2500 shopping spree!}

2.  If I weren't training it up to NYC this weekend and driving instead I would HAVE to make a stop at the DWR annex/outlet in New Jersey.  This weekend a new shipment of "scratch and dent" dining tables and chairs arrives -- up to 70% off!  Here is the link for more information.

I'm also getting excited for a trip to the Mitchell Gold outlet in Hickory, NC in mid-November.  If anyone is in the market for furniture let me know before I go and I'll keep an eye out for you!

Sweet Pillows

Today's Agenda:  Haircut + Highlights for only $68 = Successful day!  Loving the Aveda Institute in DC near Gallery Place.  Squeezed in a couple of hours of work over coffee, trip to gym and then a great haircut, highlights AND scalp massage (if I could hire someone to do a scalp massage everyday...it could be worth it!).  And Urban Outfitters just so happens to be next to the Aveda Institute.  It's the best UO -- not too hot (temperature wise), you have to go upstairs, not downstairs, to see the home and men's departments, and people are really friendly.  Plus great selection of homegoods!

These pillows from UO are so sweet...

...Birds...

...Owls...

...Love...

Buy three of any of these and toss them on a couch, loveseat, bed...for extra sweetness and good measure!
