One Reason I Miss New York

Today's Agenda:  Hoping the sun will come out...Sun, I really need you to come out so it's not dreary and I can finish up my tedious work and then go run errands in the pretty sun.  That's all I'm asking for.

I love living in DC.  It's just a great city.  And, am pretty sure it will be home for us for a long time (except for that year living in Paris that I'm hoping for in the next 10 years!).  But there are a few things I miss about living in New York.  Friends who are still in New York are top on my list!  Second on my list may be Housingworks. The building we lived in had a Housingworks just downstairs.  It was a great way to do a spring cleaning and donate things right there.  And, then proceed to find stuff to replace it with!

Look at this stuff that is for auction -- not to mention what treasures could await you inside each of the stores.

So, the Mozart wine opener is a little random.  But, sitting on the right tray could look very chic.

Swans

Today's Agenda:  Thinking dining room.  And about swans??

I'm working on a 1920s/art nouveau/mid-century/arts and crafts/contemporary inspired style for a dining room.  And I keep thinking about swans.

This is actually the image in my head.
 Illustration found here.

I found these actual swans.  I think they are all sweet and just one or maybe two in a room would go a long way.

These for sure creep me out.

When this image came up I thought it was a joke...but nope you can actually buy this.

I actually didn't think about the Black Swan movie reference until I started searching for more swan decor examples.  Hmmm.  I still think a brass swan here or there would be okay...

A Few Kitchen Updates!

Today's Agenda:  Updating excel files!  I know, not that exciting.  But completely necessary.  I keep track of expenses for each client's project in Excel so every couple of weeks need to go back through and update them for what has been purchased, what has been changed and what is still left to purchase to be sure we are still on budget.  It's fun to see the progress that's been made!

Speaking of progress...I made some recent small updates to our kitchen that I am super happy with!  The kitchen is has a fun look to it (it's pretty standard 2007 builder materials so I've tried to personalize it), is completely functional (I have what I use everyday out in just the right place and have zones -- you know, coffee zone, oatmeal zone, toaster zone) and really easy to clean up and put things away.  Can't really ask for much else!  (Well, I would love to replace the cabinets with something super sleek...but I can't have all of my projects done right away can I??).

Here's a tour of some of the updates that I'm loving.

No. 1 Update:  We updated our small appliances!  And, for relatively little money, this made a huge difference.  I was able to find appliances that met 4 criteria (1) had to look good, (2) had to work really well, (3) had to be a good price and (4) had to be easy to clean.

Meet the new coffee maker, coffee grinder and blender.  I can now grind coffee for all 12 cups of coffee at once instead of in two batches.  And I tried to limit the amount of stainless on these surfaces -- it's a cleaner look for the open space and a lot easier to clean.

And, my new amazing toaster.  I had a toaster I completely loved so it was hard to move on.  But this one is seriously amazing.  It works like a dream.  And, is super easy to clean.  Oh yeah, and if you drop it the rubber outside really minimizes any damage to your floors.

No. 2 Update:  Finally, found the perfect rug for this space!  #1 best thing about it?? It beautifully hides crumbs, spills, drops, etc. but is still easy to vacuum up every few days.  And, it's all one piece.  I tried putting two rugs together to get one long rug but the shifting of the rugs really bothered me AND even though it was a dark color it then collected a ton of lint in about a minute after being cleaned.  And, I have to admit it's pretty fun to have a tiger run in your kitchen.  {I found this rug in New York in the basement of ABC -- a great deal since it was already finished for just $149.}

No. 3 Update:  Created zones.  I am a big believer in trying to create zones for activities.  It just makes things go smoothly.  I can be getting coffee in the coffee zone while husband is getting cereal or oatmeal in the oatmeal zone.  Which, let's just say, makes the mornings a whole lot more fun.

Coffee zone. {I love the glass containers from Ikea that they had at the holidays.  The star was really sweet and vintage to me without being annoying.}

Oatmeal zone.

Bar zone. {I love the antlers I snuck in here.  They are actually stacking measuring cups that are inside but I love the brassiness of him.}

Toast zone.   Just add a cutting board and easy to make toast, waffles, a sandwich, etc.

And, yes, I could actually live on coffee, oatmeal, drinks, and toast.  Throw in some arugula, eggs and sparkling water and I'm pretty much good.

And, my favorite detail.
This piece is my mom's from when we were growing up in South Florida that I have always loved.  I found it when I was at home last year, convinced mom to let me take it with me and then was so happy to pack it in the car on the top of all of my things so that it wouldn't get crushed.  It didn't get crushed -- it melted in the hot August 4 1/2 hour car trip!  I was really sad at first, but then I just got over it and decided that it was the perfect holder for tea bags.

In and Out of Love

Today's Agenda:  Hoping this title will force husband to finally catch up on blog entries! :)

Seriously, I fell in love with this chandelier when flipping through Anthropologie's catalog.

Had a few thoughts about projects this would work really well in to give that dose of navy (which I love).

Then, I fell out of love.

Why?

It's $4,800.

I can make any budget work for any project.  Can even get a Saarinen oval table into a dining room and still do a dining room and living room on a reasonable budget.

But, I can't do $4,800 for this.

Sadly, to be filed under "Inspiration", not "Items to Purchase".

And, the search begins for one like this but with a budget-friendly price...

Hope everyone is having a good Wednesday!

When is the next dinner party??

Today's Agenda:  I'm pushing through some fun client projects but thoughts keep drifting to two sad events -- the crises in the wake of the earthquake/tsunami in Japan and a recent senseless crime in Bethesda.  It just reminds you how precious each day is and how fragile life is.

I don't know how to segway from that to these crazy awesomely chic and cheap plates I found at Marshalls.  But, that's just how life is, right?  The big picture and small details shape our days and striking a balance between both is necessary.

So, to inspire you (and me) to invite a few friends over for an impromptu dinner party, check out these beautiful plates I found last week at Marshalls -- just perfect for a small gathering with friends.

I'm really into greens, white, pinks and navys these days...maybe I always have been -- a little preppy vintage which I love.  It's a cheery palette too but still subtle.  And coordinates well with the color of foods!  Even better were the prices of these puppies -- a Calvin Klein plate marked $175 retail for just $20, Kate Spade goodness for just $10 for a large plate!

The key with Marshalls is that you have to look in unexpected places in the store for what you are looking for.  You know, look near the children's toys for that cup and saucer you want.  Or in the scarves section for one more set of stationery.  And definitely don't think that clearance items are just in the clearance section.  But that's what makes it fun :)  It's also great fun to mix and match -- and if you love something and it's a steal but there's only 3 and not 4 of that thing...well, buy the 3 and then have fun looking for the 4th!  So, I gathered all of these from multiple aisles, laid them out to make sure they went well together (and to check to be sure I wasn't just buying them because they were a good deal -- super important to do that), took a couple out of the mix and called it done!

Now, which setting do I use for the next dinner party...

Sequins!

Today's Agenda:  I think I may have found THE rug for a dining room project I'm working on.  Stay tuned!

On a completely separate note, I really want to buy these but am resisting.  They are so sweet and would be perfect for next year's Christmas decorations...or Easter...or year round...plus I'm a sucker for sequins and glitter.
