Scrolling for Photos

Today's Agenda:  Thinking a lot about how best to display photos for a couple of ongoing client projects.  There are a TON of different ways to do this, right??

I ran across this photo holder at Pier One recently.  Pier One is one of those stores that you can really find some awesome pieces in -- they may not look exactly right in the store but take them home and they can be the home run you were looking for.  Without hurting your wallet too.   Here's a photo of the holder.  It's pretty unassuming, a little froo-frooy (a word??) and has the potential to be gimmicky.  And...only $9.99!

I decided to give it a chance and bought it recently for a project I was working on.  My client had boxes filled with great photos that you only wished you had and might buy at a flea market they were so great!!  I hated for them to just sit in a box so was able to make them a part of this room.

I also liked the idea of being able to change out photos easily.  Or pop in postcards or ticket stubs.  This way creating a nice mix of memories, especially in a space where you don't have a ton of space to do frames (and they had a wall of photos just outside this room so I didn't want to repeat that). I also like the size of the photo holder.  Not too big, not too small.  And would be hung horizontally or vertically.

Want to see a few pictures of these photo holders in their home?

Here are a few tips for making this type of holder work in a room:

1.  Stuff Them:  Here's your chance to layer lots and lots of pictures in these.  First of all, they stay better when there are a few pictures in each little holder thing.  Second, the layered look fills them out and invites you to take a closer look.

2.  Pick a Theme:  I used mostly "older" looking photographs in these holders instead of "newer" ones. By picking a theme -- "older" photographs, photographs of just kids, photographs of just buildings, etc. you are creating a collection and give the display more richness and it looks more complete and not so random.  You could even use ticket stubs or postcards from your favorite art museum.

3.  Hang at the Right Level:  Have you ever noticed how some pictures or art is just hung too high?  It's important to hang the frame, holder, etc. at the right height.  I like to hang items close to whatever piece of furniture is nearby.  In this room, I hung the holders close to the couch so that when you are sitting on this couch, you can look over and appreciate some of the photographs.  You might even see a different one you hadn't noticed in awhile!  I think it makes the room seem cozier to hang photos this way.

Curious about the before?
 Pretty fun, transformation :)

You know what's even better?  The deals scored in this room!  The couch was originally $3400 and purchased for just $1100 -- it has a down cushion and is in pristine condition and sooo comfy -- and the ottoman was just $150 from Marshalls -- perfect for storing all of the extra photos we didn't use and a place to pop your feet on or with the trays on top to set a drink!

  1. That is a fun way to display photos. I also think one on the back of child's door with their family/friends photos would be cute too!
